This is the third part of my 4 part focus on our mission statement at Cooks Hill. “Developing fully devoted disciples for Jesus Christ through transformational worship, community and service” So far we have talked about what it means to be a fully devoted disciple and transformational worship. In this article I want to discuss transformational community.

In an article for The Wall Street Journal, writer Leonard Mlodinow shares a funny story from the life of baseball great Joe DiMaggio:
It was the summer of 1945, and World War II had ended. Former soldiers, including famous baseball stars, streamed back into America and American life. Yankee slugger Joe DiMaggio was trying to be "Yankee fan Joe DiMaggio," sneaking into a mezzanine seat with his four-year-old son, Joe, Jr., before rejoining his team. A fan noticed him, then another. Soon throughout the stadium people were chanting, "Joe, Joe, Joe DiMaggio!" DiMaggio, moved, gazed down to see if his son had noticed the tribute. He had. "See, Daddy," said the little DiMaggio, "everybody knows me!"

I want to take this opportunity to remind us of our mission at Cooks Hill. “Developing fully devoted disciples for Jesus Christ through transformational worship, community and service” I ask you to consider what it means to be a fully devoted disciple for Jesus Christ. What would it look like to be fully devoted? For me the best example I can think of is my relationship to my wife DeLynne. I am fully devoted to her. This does not mean I am always with her, always talking to her or even always thinking of her. It does mean she is upper most in all of my choices and decisions. Any decision of consequence would never be made without serious consideration or consultation with my wife. I have committed to a steadfast and special relationship with her. I have known some men and women over the years who are not very devoted to their spouses. I have heard horror stories of men who come home with a brand new pick-up without discussion with their wife. Even worse we have all heard of failure in marriage to commit only to intimacy with one’s spouse. When DeLynne and I were married we lit the unity candle. The two outside candles represented our separate lives up to that point. We lit the middle candle and blew out the two outside candles to represent merging our lives together as one. We didn’t cease to be separate people, but we merged our goals and dreams together. Marriage was a choice to share our lives together. To love, honor and respect each other above every other earthly relationship.
When I became a follower of Jesus Christ it was a very important choice for me. Discipleship is a call to full devotion to Jesus Christ. I would ask you to consider your devotion to Christ. I would also ask you to commit your life to full devotion to Him. Jesus is the lover of our souls and desires our love in return.
Sincerely, Pastor Mitch

It is important to understand the scriptures regarding the presence of God. According to scripture we cannot escape God’s presence. In Psalm 139:7 –10 (ESV) it says, “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.” When we meet for corporate worship we never have to plead for God to be present since He is there already. What then is meant when someone says they hunger for the presence of God? Is that a plausible question?

When we moved here just over 14 years ago former bishop Elmer and Marjorie Parsons allowed us to stay in their home for a time while our home was being completed. This humble gesture symbolized well their generous and loving way of life. With all of their accomplishments they maintained a unpretentious and unassuming perspective on life. Elmer went to be with the Lord in 2007 and Marjorie has recently moved to Leoti Kansas to be near family. To honor Elmer and Marjorie I want to offer this article Elmer wrote for the Bishop’s column in the Light and Life Magazine some 25 years ago. The article is entitled “To the Almost Christian”.
