![]() You may have seen a poster with the following question written on it: “If being a Christian were a crime, would there be enough evidence to convict you?” Good question. Probably one we should ask ourselves from time to time. Of course, the first step to being a Christian is accepting the gift of salvation. That’s the first step. But Jesus also calls us to follow Him. That means that we are more than a “fan” of Jesus, it means we are sold out to Him and desire to become more and more like Him. Jesus tells us how we can do that when he instructs His disciples and us that following Him involves loving others: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. (John 13:34 ) Jesus is saying that loving one another is not a choice it is a responsibility for those that love Him. In 1 Corinthians 13 , Paul describes the kind of love Jesus was talking about. This type of love is called agape. It is known for its “caring in action”. It doesn’t really involve the kind of emotions other types of love involve-- ![]() other than the good feelings one has when care is put into action. Agape is defined as “selfless love”. This is the kind of love Jesus calls us to have for others. John Piper in his book, “Getting To Heaven,” explains agape beautifully when he says: it means we love those who are different, those who are indifferent, and those who don’t want to be different but continue in their old ways. That’s pretty inclusive, don’t you think? But, it’s also an important piece of that “evidence” that will help to convict you. Blessings, Pastor Carolyn Vian |
