| Is There A Cure for Worry? |
|
As sojourners on this earth, most people experience times of worry. We are often faced with problems that cause worry to well up inside of us. However, if worrying becomes a habit, it can have consequences that effect us both spiritually and physically. I knew a person who fell into the category of a habitual worrier. It was sad to see this person actually seek out things to worry about. If a problem was resolved, one might hear this person comment: "I'll just have to find something else to worry about!" Jesus tells His disciples in John 14:1 : "Do not let you hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me." That promise still stands some two thousand years later. We are never out of God's loving care. He constantly cares for us. In Isaiah 41:10 He says: "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." These are God's promises to us today. Here are some helpful ways to fight worry: 1. Worry is a negative thought. The laws of Physics tell us that no two things can occupy the same place at the same time. That goes for our thoughts as well. Replace the "worry thoughts" with "positive thoughts". Cling to the promises of God. It is always helpful to memorize scriptures that remind us of God's enduring presence and care for us. 2. God loves to hear from you! Lay your worry at His feet and leave it there. I Peter 6:7 tells us: "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." 3. Remember Philippians 4:19 : "God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus." 4. Pray. Stay in contact with your heavenly Father. Max Lucado says this in his book He Still Moves Stones: "Our prayers may be awkward. Our attempts may be feeble. But since the power of prayer is in the One Who hears it, and not the one who says it, our prayers do make a difference." 5. Keep a journal of answered prayer. This should include both the times that God said "yes" and the times He said "no" to a specific request. If you are like me, you might look back on those times that God said "no" and, with the perspective of time, be glad He did say "no". We don't always know what is best for us. But He always knows what is best and He always wants the best for each of us. Trust His sovereignty. The one Who made the universe and gave you life, can be trusted! Be blessed by God's constant care for you and don't let worry cheat you of that truth! |
